Welcome!

I am a cultural anthropologist and retired museum curator who celebrates, collaborates with, and documents the work of visual artists. From the 19th century to the present, most of the artists I work with are, or were, fiber artists and weavers. Many originate from indigenous cultures and draw from deep traditions, but many also contribute to contemporary art practices in the modern world.

I write to share. What’s the use of investigating a topic if it isn’t brought home to people who care about the subject like I do? And if it isn’t introduced to newcomers first entering the house? I love exploring new rooms and corridors–within my mind, in libraries and archives, and out in “the field,” in artists’ homes and studios, trading posts, galleries, and museums. Much of my work is documentary in nature and builds on earlier research by scholars like Joe Ben Wheat, Kate Peck Kent and Gladys Reichard–heroes to whom I’m deeply grateful. I’ve learned as well from many colleagues, students, and artists, whose enthusiasm and guidance I appreciate.

As an author of books and articles and as a lecturer about native Southwest weavers and weaving, I enjoy exploring fresh thoughts every day (although I don’t post ’em daily!). I hope to express these in clear and creative ways and, in the process, to explode stereotypes and to make new friends. One of my writing buddies (and another hero), Sharman Apt Russell, says her main goal as an author is “to live in astonishment and gratitude.” I could not agree more–what a great state of being.
